September 26, 2014

We had another great week at DES! We welcomed in fall, participated in a great enrichment program, and kicked off our next fundraiser! We also celebrated the birthday of an American legend It's hard to believe that we've already been in school for a month!

Have a great week,
Sam Cederbaum

Johnny the K
Thanks to the PTO, our students enjoyed the musical talents of Johnny the K. He infused character, respect, and anti-bullying into a FANTASTIC show!

Students brought home their Meadow Farms packets on Friday. Please consider supporting our PTO through this fundraiser.

We had a great time celebrating the life of John Chapman on Friday. John was born in Leominster, Massachusetts in 1774 and is better known as Johnny Appleseed! Mr. C. dressed the part and visited each classroom throughout the day. We discussed Johnny's accomplishments, aspects of tall tales, and what we enjoy about apples! Mr. C. also read each class a story about Johnny during his visit.

Traffic Reminder
There is a one way traffic pattern through the school complex. All traffic should enter via Gleason Court and exit onto Route 16.

School Council
Mr. C. is still looking for parent and community volunteers to serve on this year's School Council. This group is responsible for assisting the principal in identifying the educational needs of our students, improving our school handbook, and developing our school improvement plan. The group will meet monthly for one hour. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Mr. C. by calling the main office.

Good afternoon,
We had a great week at the Elementary School! We enjoyed the last few days of summer weather, remembered a significant day in history, and even talked like pirates! We finished up our week with a sweet treat from the PTO!

Have a great week,
Sam Cederbaum

Please Take Note
Construction workers will be on site this weekend at the Elementary School. They will be completing work around the playground areas. For your safety, please avoid using the Elementary School playgrounds this weekend, September 20 and 21.

Super Science
Students in fifth grade worked on their first science lab this week.  Not only did students get to practice using different scientific equipment, they also began learning about the different components of a lab experiment and learned about lab safety as well.

A Day to Remember
On September 11th, the fifth grade classes read a kid-friendly explanation of the tragic events that occurred on September 11, 2001. We then read a poem titled, "Daddy's Pink Roses," which expresses the strength and courage of a young girl who lost her father on this day. Every student created a "wordle" to depict their thoughts on what it means to be free.

Talk Like A Pirate Day
September 19 is International Talk Like A Pirate Day! We celebrated all day with plenty of Arrrgghhs, ahoys, and mateys! We found hidden treasure scattered around the building and some of us even wore our finest pirate garb! Luckily we made it through the day without anyone having to walk the plank!

Congratulations to our first two positive referrals of the school year. We are always on the lookout for students going above and beyond as excellent members of our school community! Congratulations to Ryan and Paul!

PTO Ice Cream Social
We celebrated the beginning of another great school year with our first PTO Family Night Event! The Ice Cream Social is always a great time to catch up with friends, dance to some great music, and of course have some delicious ice cream! A HUGE thank you to the MANY volunteers that made this event possible. I'd also like to thank the Ice Cream Lady for donating the ice cream and paper goods! We had a TON of fun and are already looking for to next month's event: Trunk or Treat!
